Overview

The Business Intelligence tutorial is a step-by-step guide to explore raw data and create Search Algorithms on Foxtrot Code’s platform for an interactive dashboard with simulated data from an e-commerce website. The BI tutorial use-case is to create a Splunk dashboard capable of leveraging very large-scale datasets and Splunk Search Algorithms from Foxtrot Code’s platform. The Search Algorithms will generate maps, bar charts, pie charts, tree maps, as well as event tables and the data for drop downs to filter the dashboard.

A basic knowledge of the kind of data generated in website logs (e.g. duration, bytes, status codes, devices, etc) is helpful, but not required.

STEP 2 – Open the Documentation

Open the documentation accompanying the Business Intelligence algorithms. The documentation includes step-by-step instructions including videos for each subject. CLICK HERE to open the documentation in a new window.

Once you’ve downloaded the tutorial algorithms, in STEP 3, use the documentation to guide the tutorial process step-by-step.

STEP 3- Download the Tutorial

Click the green “Download Copy” button (above).

This places a FREE copy of the tutorial algorithms into your development account. The tutorial includes a full final version of the algorithms for your reference as well as a partially complete version of the algorithms to provide structure to the learning experience. You will add the missing pieces to tutorial. Videos backup the written instructions to make it easy to follow along. The tutorial comes complete with access to a cloud-based Splunk implementation to test out your finished algorithms with the various visualizations.

Tutorial Description

Access data

The tutorial already has data loaded and ready for you to use. The tutorial teaches you how to access data from a Foxpatch on Foxtrot Code.

Clean up

Data cleanup is typically something that Data Miners need to do often. The tutorial teaches you how to fix common problems with data, which will need to be resolved before you start to explore data.

Explore

Data exploration begins by looking at the data in a tabular form, and then using a Cross Filter to analyze what the data can tell you about correlation.

Refine

Refining the data with specific BI data reduction, manipulation, and statistical analysis.

Reformat

Using the refined data to yield specific formats for bar charts, pie charts, maps, tree-charts, and data for drop downs.

Visualize Output

Use the reformatted data from your Foxpatch to create dashboard panels using Splunk.


Tutorial Structure

The tutorial is organized into three sections to provide the user with an understanding of the process to access, explore, and develop algorithms for Business Intelligence solutions.

1.0 Read

The Read section teaches you how to access raw data, reduce it to needed fields, and normalize and re-label fields for use downstream.

2.0 Analyze

The Analyze section focuses on data exploration, further reducing the data and performing clean up, and then using Foxtrot Code’s Cross Filter technology to explore and visualize the data to detect potential correlations and anomalies.

3.0 Dashboard

The Dashboard section leverages what we learned in the Analyze section to create statistical analyses to build the refined data for downstream processes and visualization.
